Understanding the Work, the Philosophy and What to Expect

Why This Work Matters

Life demands a lot from all of us. Whether we're navigating relationships, raising a family, building a career, leading an organization, supporting others, adapting to change, or simply trying to keep up with the pace of everyday life; the way we think, feel, communicate, and respond influences our experiences and outcomes.

Many of us spend years operating on habits, assumptions, stress responses, and patterns that sometimes developed long before we understood them. Some serve us well. Others can leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or frustrated by the gap between the life we want and the life we're experiencing. We don’t know what we don’t know. We usually just know we don’t feel the way we want to and aren’t living the way we want to.

The good news is that people can learn. We can develop greater awareness, strengthen skills, gain new perspectives, and make intentional changes over time. While growth looks different for everyone, there are several core principles that consistently guide meaningful and sustainable change.

The principles below help shape the work of Sechrist Consulting and The Self-Regulation Lab™.

Principles That Guide This Work

  • 1. Greater Awareness Creates Greater Choice

The more we understand our thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, stress responses, habits, and patterns, the more options we have for responding intentionally rather than automatically. Awareness doesn't solve every challenge, but it creates the opportunity to choose how we respond instead of being driven solely by old habits, stress, or reactivity.

  • 2. Understanding Yourself Changes How You Navigate Life

Our thoughts, emotions, experiences, beliefs, and behaviors influence how we communicate, make decisions, build relationships, handle stress, and view ourselves. Learning to better understand these influences creates greater clarity, flexibility, and effectiveness in everyday life.

  • 3. Meaningful Change Requires More Than Insight

Insight is valuable, but understanding something is not always enough to change it. Sustainable growth happens when awareness is paired with practical tools, intentional action, and consistent application. Learning is important. Practicing what we learn is what creates lasting change.

  • 4. People Function Best When We Work With the Whole Person

Human beings are complex. Thoughts, emotions, physical experiences, relationships, environments, habits, and past experiences continually influence one another. Lasting change often occurs when we stop focusing on isolated pieces of ourselves and learn to work with the whole system instead.

  • 5. Growth and Wellbeing Can Coexist

While meaningful change sometimes involves discomfort, it can also create more space for calm, clarity, connection, fulfillment, and self-care. As we better understand ourselves and become less driven by stress and automatic patterns, we often experience more of what helps us feel grounded and fully engaged in life.

Rather than relying on a single theory or methodology, the approach integrates research, professional experience, practical application and lived experience to help individuals and organizations function more intentionally and sustainably within the realities of everyday life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sechrist Consulting and The Self-Regulation Lab™?

Sechrist Consulting helps individuals and organizations better understand themselves, gain practical tools, and apply what they learn so they can navigate life with greater awareness, resilience, and intention.

Services include Private Coaching, Organizational Consulting, and The Self-Regulation Lab™ experiential workshops and wellness experiences.

The Self-Regulation Lab™ is the experiential learning branch of Sechrist Consulting. Through interactive workshops, group experiences, and retreat-style intensives, participants explore how thoughts, emotions, stress, habits, relationships, and life experiences influence everyday functioning while learning practical skills that support greater self-awareness, emotional intelligence, wellbeing, and intentional living.

Whether working with an individual, a family, a leader, a team, or an organization, the goal is the same: helping people better understand themselves, strengthen their ability to respond intentionally, and create meaningful, sustainable change.

Do I have to believe in mindfulness, nervous system work or any particular philosophy for this to work?

No.

You do not need to adopt any particular belief system, philosophy, spiritual practice, or worldview to benefit from these services.

My approach is informed by decades of professional experience, ongoing learning, research, and practical application across multiple disciplines and spiritual traditions, including psychology, behavioral health, neuroscience, emotional intelligence, leadership development, communication, stress physiology, mindfulness, somatic approaches, and human behavior.

What matters is your willingness to become more aware of yourself, remain curious, explore new perspectives, and apply what you learn in ways that work for you.

Some people are drawn to the science. Others connect more strongly with the practical exercises, reflective experiences, or real-world applications. There is no single right way to engage with this work.

The goal is not to convince you to think a certain way. The goal is to help you better understand yourself so you can make more intentional choices moving forward.

Take what is useful. Practice what helps. Leave the rest.

Ultimately, you are the expert on your own life.

Are these services therapy?

No.

Sechrist Consulting and The Self-Regulation Lab™ provide coaching, consulting, and experiential learning services using coaching, facilitation, training and education methods. They are not psychotherapy, clinical counseling, psychiatric treatment, crisis intervention, or medical care.

While my work is informed by more than 25 years of experience in mental health, behavioral health, leadership, crisis response, organizational development, coaching, and human services, these services are designed to support personal growth, skill development, self-understanding, leadership effectiveness, and organizational improvement rather than diagnose or treat mental health conditions.

Individuals experiencing significant mental health concerns, active crisis situations, unmanaged trauma symptoms, or conditions requiring clinical treatment should seek support from an appropriately licensed healthcare or mental health professional. In some situations, ongoing therapeutic support may be recommended or required to participate in certain services.

Who are these services for:

These services are designed for individuals, professionals, leaders, caregivers, parents, teams, and organizations who want to navigate life more intentionally and effectively.

Some people seek support because they are experiencing stress, burnout, overwhelm, communication challenges, leadership strain, relationship difficulties, major life transitions, or recurring patterns that no longer serve them.

Others are not struggling with a specific problem. They simply want to better understand themselves, strengthen important life and leadership skills, improve relationships, increase resilience, and create a more intentional way of living and working.

For organizations, consulting support is often brought in when teams are stretched, systems feel reactive rather than structured, or leadership is carrying unsustainable levels of strain. This work focuses on stabilizing human systems within the organization, strengthening communication and decision-making pathways, and supporting leaders at every level so they can operate with greater clarity, consistency, and capacity. The result is improved alignment, reduced risk, lower turnover, sustained high quality services or production, and a healthier, more sustainable organizational culture.

You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from this work. Many people participate because they want to be more proactive, self-aware, and intentional in how they approach life, leadership, relationships, and personal growth.

What is the difference between understanding myself and actually changing?

Understanding yourself is often the first step, but understanding alone does not always create change.

Some people know why they think, feel, or react the way they do. They can identify patterns, explain their challenges, and recognize what they would like to do differently. Yet they often find themselves repeating the same behaviors, making the same choices, or experiencing the same frustrations.

Awareness creates opportunity. Change happens when awareness is combined with practice, new experiences, and intentional action.

This is because people are complex. Our thoughts, emotions, habits, relationships, stress responses, environments, and past experiences all influence how we respond to life. Knowing what to do and consistently doing it are often two different things.

The work of Sechrist Consulting and The Self-Regulation Lab™ focuses on meeting people where they are and then helping them bridge the gap between insight and application. The goal is not simply to understand yourself better. The goal is to use what you learn to make more intentional choices, create healthier patterns, and build a life that feels more aligned with who you want to be.

What happens during a group experience or workshop?

Every experience is customized based on the participants, goals, setting, timeframe, and overall intention of the event.

Experiences may include:

• Guided relaxation and restorative practices

• Reflection and self-discovery exercises

• Mindfulness and grounding techniques

• Breathwork and stress-management tools

• Communication and relationship-building activities

• Experiential learning and group discussion

• Light movement and interactive exercises

• Practical skills that can be applied in everyday life

Many participants are surprised by how calming, engaging, and practical the experiences feel. While greater awareness can sometimes bring insight into patterns, habits, or stressors that have been operating in the background, the experiences are intentionally designed to create space to slow down, reflect, reconnect, and learn.

The goal is not perfection, performance, or emotional exposure. The goal is to help participants better understand themselves, gain practical tools, and apply what they learn in ways that support greater awareness, resilience, wellbeing, and intentional living.

Will this work feel uncomfortable emotionally?

Sometimes, yes.

As you build greater self-awareness, you may begin noticing thoughts, emotions, habits, stress patterns, beliefs, or ways of relating to yourself that were previously outside of your awareness or not fully understood.

For some people, this increased awareness can feel uncomfortable at times. That discomfort does not automatically indicate that something is wrong. More often, it reflects becoming aware of internal experiences that were already present but not fully recognized.

At the same time, the experiences themselves are intentionally designed to be grounding, supportive, reflective, and regulating. Many participants report feeling calmer, clearer, lighter, more connected to themselves, and better able to understand what is happening internally.

The intention is not to create discomfort for its own sake, but to support greater awareness, understanding, and capacity so you can respond to yourself and your life more intentionally.

Like many meaningful forms of growth, there can be moments where increased awareness brings forward what was previously unexamined. Over time, that awareness can support better decision-making, healthier patterns, and a more intentional way of living.

This work is invitational and paced with care. You are encouraged to engage at a level that feels appropriate and sustainable for you.

I’m worried this could 'make things worse.'

This is a common and understandable concern when considering personal development, coaching, or self-exploration work.

For some people, increased awareness can initially feel uncomfortable because it interrupts familiar patterns of distraction, overfunctioning, emotional avoidance, or staying focused externally rather than internally.

What can sometimes feel like things getting worse is often the experience of becoming more aware of stress, fatigue, emotions, or patterns that were already present but not fully acknowledged.

The intention of this work is not to destabilize people. The structure of the experiences is designed to support regulation, clarity, and greater internal steadiness. Many participants report feeling relief, improved perspective, and a stronger sense of personal agency pretty quickly into the process.

While discomfort can arise as awareness increases, the broader purpose is to support better functioning—clearer thinking, more effective communication, more intentional choices, and a healthier relationship with self over time.

In many ways, this work involves tolerating what may be short-term discomfort in service of long-term improvement in how you feel, relate, and navigate life.

That said, these services are not a substitute for psychotherapy, trauma treatment, crisis support, or other clinical care when those needs are present.

How much time does this work require?

That depends on your goals, your circumstances, and the type of support you choose.

Some people engage in occasional workshops, retreats, or group experiences as part of ongoing personal growth, self-care, or professional development. Others participate in more structured coaching or organizational work during periods of transition, increased responsibility, burnout, or intentional change.

Like any meaningful skill-building process, change requires awareness, practice, and application over time. The most significant shifts often come not just from the experience itself, but from how consistently the insights and tools are applied afterward.

The intention is not to create dependency on services. The focus is on building internal capacity—so that people can continue applying what they learn long after formal support has ended.

Can services be combined or customized?

Yes.

Each individual, group, team, and organization brings different goals, needs, challenges, and levels of readiness. While services are offered in structured formats, there is often flexibility in how they are combined or sequenced to best support those goals.

For example:

• Organizations may integrate consulting services with The Self-Regulation Lab™ workshops to support both systems-level alignment and staff development.

• Individuals may participate in group experiences while also engaging in private coaching through Sechrist Consulting.

• Teams may begin with a focused workshop and later expand into leadership consultation or ongoing support.

A Discovery Call provides space to clarify goals, explore options, and determine the most appropriate starting point or combination of services.

Why are your prices lower than some similar services?

Accessibility is a core value of Sechrist Consulting and The Self-Regulation Lab™.

These services are grounded in more than 25 years of clinical, organizational, and leadership experience, and reflect a high level of professional training and applied expertise. At the same time, there is a strong commitment to making this work more accessible to individuals and organizations who may not otherwise engage in this type of support.

Pricing is intentionally structured to balance professional integrity, sustainability, and accessibility where possible.

The goal is to make practical tools, education, and skill development in self-awareness, emotional regulation, and leadership capacity available to a wider range of people—without compromising the quality or depth of the work.

What if I am interested but nervous or unsure where to start?

That is a common place to begin.

Most people exploring this kind of work are holding a mix of curiosity, hesitation, hope, and uncertainty about what might actually help.

You do not need to have clarity before reaching out.

A free 30-minute discovery call is available to talk through your goals, answer questions, and explore whether this approach fits what you are looking for right now.

The purpose of the conversation is not to persuade you to move forward. It is to give you space to get clear, ask questions, and make an informed decision about whether the work is a fit for you or your organization.

Do you work with organizations and teams?

Yes.

At Sechrist Consulting, I help organizations improve functioning and sustainability by addressing the human factors that influence leadership, communication, decision-making, engagement, retention, workplace culture, and performance.

When people are chronically stressed, overwhelmed, reactive, disconnected, or operating in survival mode, organizations often experience increased conflict, higher turnover, reduced effectiveness, communication breakdowns, quality concerns, and leadership strain.

Through assessment, strategy development, coaching, and experiential learning, I help organizations identify what is driving dysfunction and implement practical solutions that strengthen both organizational performance and the wellbeing of the people responsible for delivering it.

Because sustainable organizations are built on sustainable people.

Engagements are customized based on the organization’s goals, culture, current challenges, and desired outcomes.

Do you work with children and teens?

Yes.

The Self-Regulation Lab™ offers developmentally appropriate group experiences, workshops, and intensives for children and adolescents focused on building emotional awareness, self-understanding, and practical self-regulation skills.

These experiences are educational, experiential, and designed to support young people in navigating stress, emotions, transitions, relationships, and everyday challenges in age-appropriate ways.

Programming may be offered in schools, youth-serving organizations, community settings, and other group environments.

Participation requirements, parent or guardian permissions, and adult involvement vary depending on age and setting.

Disclaimer: Services provided are educational, coaching, consulting, and experiential in nature. They are not psychotherapy, mental health counseling, psychiatric treatment, or crisis services, and are not a replacement for clinical care. If you are experiencing severe, unmanaged trauma, psychiatric instability, or active crisis, I urge you to consult with a licensed healthcare professional. Individual results may vary and cannot be guaranteed.
